Pro-Microfinance International (PMI) is a registered 501 (c) 3 charity under the US Revenue Code. It is currently operating in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) since June 2008, it seeks to empower women and men irrespective of lineage, age, or marital status through the provision of micro-credit services, fostering increased livelihood security, networks for solidarity, and the opportunity to grow personal capital.

- Our Vision and Mission

The vision of Pro-Microfinance International is to become one of the most impactful and pioneering microfinance institutions in Africa, providing financial services to the most inaccessible and underserved regions of the continent. Through using existing local social networks, Pro-Microfinance International is able to provide desperately needed micro loans for income generating activities to those without access to formal credit systems.

Pro-Microfinance International’s mission is to empower both women and men economically and socially.  We are dedicated to helping women and men realize their full potential by providing them with necessary tools to build their lives and those of their families and their community

- Our History

Pro-Microfinance’s Business model draws its inspiration from the Social Business of “Maman Kahindo Sikuli Mariana (1933- 2006)” started in the 1980’s in Butembo DR Congo.  The business consisted of providing credit “in-kind”, in the form of donated clothing, to struggling women and men who target their own nearby markets and sell these textiles, thereby building up their own capital to start an income generating activity for the livelihood of their families.

Some of those in the network she lent to have become successful businesspeople with these loans. This particular practice and the impact it creates in most of the families involved is the source of our inspiration. Pro-microfinance aims at turning this informal network into a formal microfinance organization using the same model.  The objective is to scale up this social business and the profit generated will build up the capital for a formal microfinance institution with diversified products.
